Premium vs Discount: Where Price Sits in the Range

October 1, 2026  ·  BY BIG BULL 🔱

Every bad trade I have ever taken had the same flaw.

I bought too high or I sold too low. Not the wrong idea, not the wrong direction, just the wrong place inside the range. Premium and discount pricing fixed that for me. It is the simplest concept in my entire process, and it might be the most valuable one: a range has a cheap half and an expensive half, and professionals only buy in the cheap half.

The concept, with no jargon

Take any clear price range, a swing high to a swing low. The middle of that range is equilibrium, the 50 percent level. Everything above the midpoint is premium territory, where price is relatively expensive. Everything below is discount, where price is relatively cheap.

The rule writes itself: buy in discount, sell in premium, do nothing at equilibrium.

It sounds too simple to matter. It is not. Most retail losses happen because traders buy breakouts in premium after price has already run, and short breakdowns in discount after price has already fallen. They are directionally right and locationally bankrupt, and in options trading, location is where the money is made or lost.

Institutions think this way natively. A big desk does not chase extended price. It waits for price to come to the cheap side of the range, fills there, and sells into the expensive side where retail is still buying.

How I measure the range on $SPY and $QQQ

I use the dealing range that matters today. Premarket futures range. Prior day high to low. The current intraday leg from the morning swing low to the swing high. The right range is the one price is actively trading inside, and it updates as new swings print.

I mark equilibrium and respect it. The 50 percent level is no-man's land. Entries at equilibrium have no location edge: you are paying fair price with a stop that has to travel further than it should. I pass on fair. I get paid on cheap.

I combine location with my sequence. Premium and discount is a filter, not a trigger. My trades still need the sweep, the shift, and the structure break. What location does is tell me which signals to take seriously. A bearish shift that forms in premium, after a sweep of the highs, inside a range that has room to fall to discount: that is the full stack. A bullish signal in premium gets ignored no matter how pretty it looks.

This is the same logic behind my high value zone entries. The zone is only high value when it sits in the right part of the range. A pullback into discount is value. A pullback that never leaves premium is just less-expensive expensive.

The three locations, graded

Deep discount after a sweep of the lows: my favorite long location. Stops collected below, price cheap, shift confirms. A+ territory.

Premium after a sweep of the highs: the mirror image for puts. The crowd bought the breakout at the most expensive price available, and I am happy to sell it back to them on the way down.

Equilibrium: where I do my best work by doing nothing. The journal entries I am proudest of are the equilibrium trades I never took.

The discipline nobody wants to hear

Premium and discount will not make you money by itself. What it does is stop you from making the most common donation in trading: paying top-of-range prices for bottom-of-range odds. Every trader knows to buy low and sell high. Almost none of them can point to the line where low becomes high. Now you can. Draw the range, mark the middle, and refuse to shop in the wrong half.

FAQ

What are premium and discount zones in trading?

Divide any price range from swing high to swing low at its midpoint. The upper half is the premium zone, where price is relatively expensive, and the lower half is the discount zone, where price is relatively cheap. Smart money traders buy in discount and sell in premium, treating the midpoint, called equilibrium, as a no-trade area.

How do I use premium and discount with my entries?

Use them as a location filter. Long setups only count in discount, short setups only count in premium, and signals at equilibrium get skipped. Combined with a confirmation sequence like a liquidity sweep followed by a structure break, location filtering removes the most common bad entries: chasing breakouts at the top of a range and shorting breakdowns at the bottom.

Which range should I measure on SPY?

Use the range price is actively trading in: premarket high to low in the morning, the prior day high to low for context, and the current intraday leg as new swings form. The midpoint of the active range is what matters, and it moves as the day builds new highs and lows.
