One Setup Specialist: Why I Stopped Collecting Strategies

August 24, 2026  ·  BY BIG BULL 🔱

My early trading career was a museum.

Breakouts on one shelf. Flags on another. A reversal pattern I half learned, a gap strategy I fully believed in for two weeks, screenshots of setups I could not have defined if you paid me. I knew a little about everything and made money at nothing. Every loss sent me shopping for the next strategy, and the shopping was the problem dressed as the solution.

The day I deleted the museum and kept one exhibit, my trading changed permanently. This is the case for the one-setup specialist, and how to choose the setup that gets your next 500 trades.

Why collectors stay broke

Every strategy has a losing season, and collectors quit during it. A setup with a real edge still produces five losers in a row on a regular basis. The collector experiences those five losses as information: this one is broken too. The specialist experiences them as weather. Same losses, opposite conclusions, and only one of them is still trading the setup when its good season arrives.

Mastery lives in the details nobody can teach. When does my setup fail fastest? Which version of it pays double? What does the perfect one feel like at minute three? Those answers exist only after hundreds of repetitions of the same pattern. A trader running eight setups for a year has fifty reps of each. A specialist has four hundred of one. The edge is in the reps, because the reps are where pattern recognition becomes reflex.

One setup makes review honest. When every trade in your journal is the same animal, expectancy, failure modes, and your personal leaks stand out in clean data. Eight setups means eight small samples and no conclusions, forever.

My one setup, and why it survived the cut

I trade the sweep reversal. Price raids a marked level of liquidity, the stops get taken, direction shifts, structure breaks, and I enter on the pullback into the high value zone. That is the whole playbook, and it has been for years.

It survived because it fits how the market actually manufactures moves, it appears on $SPY and $QQQ nearly every day in the windows I trade, and its invalidation is never ambiguous: if price closes through the sweep extreme, I am wrong and I am out. A setup you cannot define the death of is not a setup. It is a hope with chart drawings.

Notice what my one setup still requires: A+ grading to filter its weaker cousins, the full risk block, the journal. Specializing narrows the menu. It does not remove the kitchen rules.

How to pick your one setup

Pick the one your journal already likes. Sort your logged trades by setup and find the expectancy that is actually positive, not the one you enjoy most. They are frequently different, and the honest pick is the profitable stranger over the beloved loser.

Check it fits your life. A first-hour reversal setup suits a morning trader with a job. A power hour momentum setup suits someone free at 3pm. The best setup in the world is worthless in a window you cannot attend. Your schedule is part of the strategy.

Commit in writing, with a review date. One setup, 100 trades minimum, judged at the monthly review, changed only on data. Without the written commitment, the first three-loss day starts the shopping again, and the museum reopens.

Let boredom be the signal it is working. Specialists are bored a lot. They watch their pattern not appear, they pass on beautiful trades that belong to other playbooks, they take the same entry for the four hundredth time. Boredom is what mastery feels like from the inside. Collectors mistake it for a problem. It is the product.

FAQ

Should beginners learn multiple trading strategies?

No. Beginners progress faster mastering one setup with a defined entry, stop, and target, traded for at least 100 logged trades. Multiple strategies split repetitions across small samples, so no pattern recognition becomes reliable and no review data reaches conclusions.

How do I choose my one setup?

Start from your journal: pick the setup with genuinely positive expectancy over a real sample. Then confirm it appears in the hours you can actually trade and has an unambiguous invalidation level. Commit to it in writing for a fixed number of trades before judging it.

What if my one setup stops working?

First check the sample: real edges have losing seasons, and five losses is weather, not climate change. Judge only at scheduled reviews with 30 or more trades of evidence. If expectancy is truly negative across a large sample and multiple market conditions, replace the setup deliberately, not emotionally.
