High of Day and Low of Day: The Magnets Above and Below

September 17, 2026  ·  BY BIG BULL 🔱

There are two prices on your chart pulling at the market all day.

The high of day sits above, glowing. The low of day sits below. Every trader can see them, every stop cluster leans on them, and price feels drawn to both like they owe it money. That pull is real, it is mechanical, and it is one of the most tradeable forces in intraday markets: the session's extremes are liquidity magnets, and magnets eventually get visited.

Why the extremes pull price

The high of day is never just a price. It is an address where orders live.

Above it sit the stops of everyone who shorted into it and the breakout orders of everyone waiting to chase through it. Below the low of day, the mirror image: long stops underneath, breakdown sellers queued up. The longer the session goes with those extremes untested, the more orders accumulate against them, and the more valuable a trip there becomes for the players who move size.

That is the magnet effect. Untested extremes accumulate orders, and accumulated orders attract price. When $SPY is trending, extensions of the high print again and again because trend fuel lives above each new high. When the day is rotational, the raid on the extreme is where the reversal starts, because that is where the stops are richest.

The two trades the magnets offer

The raid and reversal. Price stretches into the high of day, sweeps the stops above it, and rejects. That is a Liquidity Sweep at the most visible level on the chart, and it is the first step of my short sequence: sweep, shift, structure break, entry in the high value zone. The cleaner the level and the more times it was tested without breaking, the richer the raid.

The break and go. Sometimes the magnet does not reject. Price sweeps the high, holds above it, and the stops convert into fuel for continuation. The difference between raid and breakout is what happens after the sweep: rejection with a shift down means reversal; acceptance with structure holding above means trend. My model does not guess between them. It waits for the shift and trades whichever one shows up. Guessing is expensive. Confirming is free.

Rules that keep the magnets from robbing you

Never short straight into an untested high of day. You are standing in front of the magnet with your stop inside the richest stop pool on the chart. If the short is right, it will still be right after the sweep. Let the raid happen first.

Respect the time of day. Morning raids on fresh extremes are high quality. A high of day that has survived until 3pm on a quiet day is often just a magnet the market plans to collect tomorrow, and chasing it late is how decent days go red. My time of day rules decide whether the magnet trade is even on the menu.

One raid, one trade. After the extreme is swept and the reversal plays out, the magnet is spent. Traders who keep shorting every return to a broken high are fighting a level that already gave up its secrets.

The chart is simpler than it looks

Strip a day of $SPY down to its skeleton and it is mostly a conversation between two prices: the high it made and the low it made. Where the liquidity sleeps above the first, and below the second. Trade the visits to those addresses with confirmation, and ignore everything in the empty space between.

FAQ

Why is the high of day a magnet for price?

Stop losses and breakout orders accumulate just above the high of day, especially as a session ages. Large traders need that order flow for liquidity, so price is drawn toward the extreme to trigger those orders. The same effect applies in reverse below the low of day.

How do you trade a sweep of the high of day?

Wait for price to push through the high, grab the stops, and reject. Then look for a directional shift and a structure break downward before entering on the pullback, with the stop beyond the sweep extreme. If price instead accepts above the high and builds structure there, the sweep was a breakout, and reversal trades should be abandoned.

Should I short into an untested high of day?

No. Shorting directly into an untested extreme places your stop inside the largest stop cluster on the chart, exactly where price is drawn to go. If the level is going to fail, the reversal setup will appear after the sweep with a better entry and a defined invalidation.
