0DTE vs 1DTE vs Weeklies: Picking Your Expiration
The ticker is the same. The trade is not.
A $SPY call expiring today, one expiring tomorrow, and one expiring Friday are three completely different instruments. Different decay, different movement math, different emotional experience. Most struggling options traders are not picking bad setups. They are picking decent setups in the wrong expiration, and the contract choice quietly eats the edge the setup earned.
Here is how I think about the three, and when each one earns its place.
0DTE: the scalpel
Same-day expiration is the purest intraday instrument and the least forgiving. Theta decay is a cliff, gamma is enormous, and a contract can double or die inside one 15 minute candle. That violence is the attraction. It is also the tuition.
0DTE fits a specific job: a clean intraday setup with an immediate target. My model trades liquidity sweeps with defined entries and near targets, and when the move comes fast, 0DTE pays the most per dollar of underlying movement. The contract is built for exactly that window. Used outside that window, held through chop or lunched on, it is built to die, and it will.
The rules that keep 0DTE honest: enter only on confirmed structure, take profit at the planned target, and never let a scalp become an investment. The expiration is today. Your opinion must also be about today.
1DTE: the overnight patience contract
Next-day expiration is the most underrated choice on the board. You pay a little more premium than 0DTE and in exchange you buy the two things 0DTE never gives you: time and a second chance at the morning. Theta still bites, but it bites like a normal option instead of a same-day cliff.
1DTE fits the setup that needs room. A high value zone entry late in the session. A structure break that happened at 3pm with follow-through likely tomorrow. A swing idea on $QQQ you want to hold through the close without gamma roulette at the bell. When my read is right but my timing might be early by a session, 1DTE is the honest contract for the idea.
Weeklies: the position trader's tool
Friday expirations and beyond trade like a different sport. Slower decay, smaller gamma, premium that forgives a day of chop. For multi-day swing structure, earnings-season moves on the big names, or any idea measured in days instead of hours, weeklies are where the trade belongs. The cost is real: you pay for all that time whether you use it or not, and an intraday trader holding weeklies often pays for time and never collects the move.
My decision, simplified
How long does this idea need to be right? Hours: 0DTE with strict rules. A day or two: 1DTE. Several days: weeklies. The setup answers the question. The expiration just obeys it.
What is volatility doing? High IV environments punish buyers of time. When IV is elevated around an event, I shorten the leash: 0DTE after the print or nothing. When IV is cheap and quiet, longer expirations stop charging rent I care about, and weeklies become reasonable for swing ideas.
What does my day look like? This one nobody talks about. If I cannot watch the screen, I have no business in a contract that can die by lunch. Contract choice is risk management for your attention as much as your account.

Match the contract to the clock the idea needs. Most options pain is a calendar problem wearing a strategy costume.
FAQ
What is the difference between 0DTE and weekly options?
0DTE options expire the same day, with extreme theta decay and high gamma, making them fast, cheap, and unforgiving intraday tools. Weekly options expire days later, decay more slowly, cost more premium, and forgive chop. The same setup traded in each is a different trade: 0DTE needs an immediate move, weeklies need a sustained one.
When should I trade 1DTE options?
Trade 1DTE when your setup is sound but needs more time than today offers: a late-day structure break, an entry you expect to follow through tomorrow, or any idea where being early by one session would kill a 0DTE. You pay slightly more premium for a much slower decay curve and overnight breathing room.
Which expiration is best for beginners on SPY?
1DTE or weeklies. Beginners need time to be wrong on timing without the contract dying, and 0DTE punishes every hesitation. Slower expirations let a new trader learn entries, exits, and position sizing before adding the same-day decay clock. Move to 0DTE only when the process is already consistent.
