BULLS CORNER 🔱

The Best Times of Day to Trade (My Killzone Windows)

February 20, 2026  ·  BY BIG BULL 🔱

For the first two years of my trading career, I traded all day. Bell to bell. Every wiggle, every headline, every lunch dip.

I was exhausted, overtraded, and losing money on days the market went nowhere.

Then I looked at my journal and found something that made me sick: most of my biggest losses came from the same boring window, right in the middle of the day, when volume dried up and I was trading ghosts. I was not losing because my setups were bad. I was losing because I was trading them at the wrong time.

The best time of day to trade is not a secret. It is whenever the volume shows up. The market has a schedule, and once I learned to trade around it instead of through it, everything got easier.

I call my windows killzones. Simple windows of time where I am hunting, and the rest of the day where I sit on my hands. All times below are Eastern.

The morning drive: 9:30 to 11:00 ET

This is the best window of the day. Full stop.

The open brings every trapped order from overnight, every gap reaction, every institution getting positioned. Volume is thick, ranges expand, and my setups fire the way the playbook says they should.

I let the opening range form over the first 30 minutes, then I look for Liquidity Sweeps of the PDH, PDL, or the range itself. From 10:00 to 11:00 the noise shakes out, the real direction shows up, and my PSS Model entries print.

My rules for the morning drive:

The dead zone: 11:00 to 14:00 ET

This is where I used to donate money. Midday. Lunch hour. The market flatlines, volume disappears, and price chops sideways in a range that stops out both sides.

The dead zone is the most expensive part of the day for new traders. You are staring at the screen, you are bored, and your brain starts inventing setups that are not there. You take a trade because you are awake, not because the chart gave you one.

Now I do not trade the dead zone. Period. This is not laziness, it is risk management. The market is telling you there is no edge, and the professional move is to listen.

If you cannot walk away, my midday chop survival guide covers how to sit through it. But the best midday strategy is a walk, a meal, and a review of your morning trades.

That urge to "do something" at 12:30 is not your edge calling. It is boredom wearing a costume.

The power hour: 15:00 to 16:00 ET

The last hour is my second window. Volume returns as funds rebalance, the closing imbalance orders pile in, and the market makes its final moves of the day. Breaks of the day high or low in the power hour tend to stick because there is real institutional flow behind them.

I trade this window lighter than the morning. I have usually already banked my morning work, and I protect the day. The moves can be fast and violent near the close, so I size down and keep my stops honest.

My killzone rules (taped to my monitor)

These are the rules that run my day:

Trade the open, sit the lunch, trade the close. 9:30 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 16:00. Everything in between is optional, and I usually opt out.

New traders bleed the most money in the dead zone. If you take one thing from this post, take that. The midday chop will grind your account down while you blame your strategy. Your strategy is fine. Your schedule is the problem.

One window is enough. Trade mornings, log off. Consistency in one window beats mediocrity across the whole day.

Stop trading the whole day

The market has a rhythm. Big volume in the morning, silence at lunch, a final burst at the close. I used to fight it. Now I flow with it. Time is part of your edge. Trade like it.

FAQ

What is the best time of day to day trade?

The best time of day to day trade is the morning, 9:30 to 11:00 ET, when volume is heaviest. My second window is the power hour, 15:00 to 16:00 ET, when closing flows create real moves. I avoid the 11:00 to 14:00 ET dead zone entirely.

Why is midday the worst time to trade?

Midday volume dries up, so price chops sideways in tight ranges that stop out both sides. There is no real order flow behind the moves. Most new traders lose the bulk of their money in this window.

Should I trade the first 15 minutes of the open?

I do not. The opening minutes are the noisiest part of the day. I let the opening range form over the first 30 minutes, then look for Liquidity Sweeps of the range extremes and key levels.

Is the power hour good for day trading?

Yes. The last hour brings real institutional flow as funds rebalance and closing orders pile in. I trade it lighter than the morning and always go flat by the close.

How many hours a day should I trade?

You do not need the whole session. I hunt in two windows: 9:30 to 11:00 ET and 15:00 to 16:00 ET. One solid window a day is enough.
